How to play Sokoban

Try Sokoban at your own pace and keep its objective in view. Push every crate onto a target. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Push two crates onto their targets in compact 7×7 rooms. The starting layouts can be solved; an unhelpful push may still trap a crate.

Keep the aim in sight

Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Push every crate onto a target. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

Step by step

  1. Move through empty floor.
  2. Push one crate into empty space.
  3. Never pull or push two at once.
  4. Undo a deadlock and continue.

Controls

Arrow keys or direction buttons. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Check any mode label before starting.

A useful example

A crate in a non-target corner cannot be recovered by pulling. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Read the matching step again.

Watch out for this

Consider the player’s access behind crates. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
