How to play Forty Thieves Solitaire

Take a moment with Forty Thieves Solitaire before moving to another game. Build eight suit foundations from ace to king. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Begin with the solo mode shown on the page. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Two decks, ten columns, single-pass stock, no recycle. Free solo play, no wagering.

Try a deliberate move

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Keep the objective visible.

Your goal

Build eight suit foundations from ace to king. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

Step by step

  1. Move one card at a time; build down in the same suit. Empty columns accept one card.
  2. Select a face-up card and then the destination pile or Empty slot.
  3. Use foundations where available; full Spider or Scorpion runs clear automatically.
  4. Undo reverses a choice. New deal shuffles again.

Controls

Click or tap cards and piles. Wide tableaus scroll inside the game; use Undo, Hint and New deal where shown. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

A useful example

A club 5 can move onto a club 6, but a whole run cannot move together. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Look for the relevant detail.

Watch out for this

Random deals are not guaranteed solvable. A hint is a legal move, not a winning strategy. A different version of the game may use a different rule. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
