How to play Nim

Open Nim, check the instructions and begin a round. Remove the last counter on the board to win. Use the example below to understand a decision. Begin with the same-device two players mode shown on the page. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

A careful first round

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Remove the last counter on the board to win. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Follow this game’s rules rather than another version’s.

Step by step

  1. Player 1 chooses a pile.
  2. Remove at least one counter, and up to all counters, from that pile.
  3. The next player chooses a pile and an amount.
  4. Continue until no counters remain.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Read a button’s label before selecting it. A new-round button replaces the current round.

A useful example

With piles of 1 and 2, a move may empty one pile, but cannot remove one counter from both in the same turn. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Keep the controls nearby.

Watch out for this

Only one pile may be changed per turn. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round.
